Peter Symonds - Artist Profile

Born in 1964, Peter started painting professionally at the age of 22, having graduated from Leicester University. He immediately found a ready market for his work with his last three solo exhibitions selling out within three hours of opening. His first two open edition prints, ‘Grange-in-Borrowdale’ and ‘Bleatarn House’ published in 1993 have been top sellers and led to his first two Limited Edition prints being released in 1995. He has undertaken a wide variety of both private and corporate commissions.

Autumn Days by Peter Symonds
Eventide by Peter Symonds

Working exclusively in oils, Peter is primarily a landscape painter, although he is as happy painting crowded street scenes in Nepal and Arab dhows off the African coast, as his more familiar paintings of rivers, mountains and coastal scenes of the British Isles.

He is an enthusiastic admirer of the great traditional landscape painters, particularly those painting in Britain and France towards the end of the Nineteenth and beginning of the Twentieth Centuries. Following their example, he continually seeks to move beyond mere topographical accuracy to create mood and atmosphere through the use of tone and light.

There is no doubt that amongst contemporary landscape artists, Peter’s work is greatly respected and much sought after and the growth of his reputation over the last decade would indicate that his original paintings will continue to appreciate in value.
